Happy Halloween from everyone at CMSP.
Yesterday Mike and I scouted a location for an upcoming photo shoot.
The location is a brand new emergency room. So new in fact, the ER will not be open to the public until January 2008!
The ER features the digital radiology system PAX, a 64 slice GE CT scanner, high tech looking exam rooms, nurses stations and a huge waiting room. We hope to do a few location shoots there within the next few weeks.
New images uploaded today include hematomas and contusions on a mans leg. In other words, big black and blue bruises.
In our blog later this week I plan to show a new image created today on Plant Polyphenols and a shot of the chemical reaction Luminol.
Stay tuned and enjoy our improved site at www.cmsp.com

Smoke Inhalation

Hi and welcome to CMSP's Daily Blog.
Fires in Southern California are creating health risks due to the amount of smoke in the air. Todays featured CMSP Blog Image is an illustration by medical artist Todd Buck. It shows what smoke looks like in the lungs.
Concerns stem from the particles and gases the fire generates when it burns: carbon dioxide, water vapor, carbon monoxide, particulate matter and other chemicals. When you breathe in smoke, tiny particles burrow deep into the lungs causing serious irritation, mucous build-up and breathing problems. Unfortunately those surgical masks you see people wearing don't really help since the tiny particles are so small the mask doesn't filter them out.
I guess the cold air and weather in Chicago isn't so bad after all.

MRSA in the News and in CMSP's Files

Monday October 22, 2007
Of course CMSP.com has photos of MRSA, the Superbug METHICILLIN RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS. There were at least two stories in this past weekends Chicago Tribune newspaper about MRSA. Searching www.cmsp.com for MRSA will show 10 images to choose from.
The current CMSP News features an interesting story on predicting Alzheimer's with a Blood Test. The news page also features a story on health risks from eating sushi and the Picture of the Week, which is an Electron Micrograph of the Influenza Virus. Read it soon because a new issue will be uploaded soon.
Thanks for checking todays blog. See you tomorrow.

DNA's Dr Watson Comments

DNA Illustration by Todd Buck,CMI.
Friday October 19, 2007
Most scientists know of Dr Watson. He, along with Francis Crick, pretty much "discovered" DNA and the spiral visual as we know it today. CNN reported today:
Nobel laureate biologist James Watson was suspended Friday from his longtime post at a research laboratory and canceled his planned British book tour after controversial comments that black people are not as intelligent as white people.
Watson, 79, an American who won the 1962 Nobel prize for his role in discovering the double-helix structure of DNA, apologized Thursday for his remarks -- but not before London's Science Museum canceled his talk there, planned for Friday evening.
"CMSP has licensed DNA molecule structures for years." says Henry Schleichkorn,RBP. CMSP President and author of this blog. " We have over 100 images illustrating DNA, some rights managed and some royalty free."
Another medical picture in the news this week is MRSA, Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. MRSA infections were frequent among persons in hospitals and healthcare facilities including nursing homes and dialysis centers. Now the news is stating the SUPER BUG could be more deadly then AIDS, killing 90,000 people this year! MRSA is a type of bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics including methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as Oxacillin, Penicillin and Amoxicillin.
I tried to add a picture of MRSA but couldn't. I will try to add one here in my next post.

October Monday
Hello again everybody.
Another beautiful Monday in Chicago in October.
Last week we researched a request for an online baby company. They asked for all kinds of conditions that affect infants. One of the items has been a common request we've seen many times over the years. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Also know as FAS. This is a condition passed from mother to infant when the mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy. As you can imagine it is a difficult image to aquire. But, our fantastic research team found a great (but unfortunate) image for our client.

CMSP on Steroids
Steroids have received a lot of bad press over the past few years (thanks Barry). Today we have brand new photos of injectable steroids, yes, just like those taken by professional athletes.
Our artists are creating a conceptual piece about steroids utilizing a close-up bicep image taken over 10 years ago. We should have the new image on file and online in a day or two.
Mike was using the photomicroscope again today. We had a request for human platlets in blood thinned by aspirin use.
The Custom Medical Stock Photo sales and research team is available from 9:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday. Call us at 800-373-2677 or email requests@cmsp.com

Welcome to CMSP's first blog. What a great way to keep up-to-date with CMSP happenings.
By now, you probably know of the hair samples we photographed for the London Times. That was an interesting request. We ended up licensing the two images to several other UK news companies. If you don't know, the London Times wanted a photo that compared hair samples from an alive person and a deceased person. Mike Fisher obtained the samples then photographed them using our photomicroscope. If you want to see the images do an image search on "dead hair" at www.cmsp.com
Yesterday I was researching images showing PERITONITIS. If you have anything on the subject please include them in your next submission. They should have a connection to abdominal surgery.
Thanks for reading our blog. More to come next week. Henry
