Today's Cool Image features an ultrasound of a 4 month old developing male fetus. It just so happens this fetus grew up and now attends Eastern Illinois University.

Since its introduction in the late 1950’s ultrasonography has become a very useful diagnostic tool in Obstetrics.
In the early 1950's, before the use of ultrasounds, some pregnant patients were x-rayed. I'll post an image showing the fetus x-ray next week. Luckily, the healthcare community stopped this practice and turned to ultrasounds.
According to Ob-ultrasound.net, the information obtained from different reflections are recomposed back into a picture on the monitor screen (a sonogram, or ultrasonogram). Movements such as fetal heart beat and malformations in the fetus can be assessed and measurements can be made accurately on the images displayed on the screen. Such measurements form the cornerstone in the assessment of gestational age, size and growth in the fetus.
See you tomorrow. CMSP.
