Climax-Molybdenum Mine Pictures at CMSP

Eruption of tainted water could swamp Colorado town

Charles Bilinky, one of CMSP's contributing photographers brought this to our attention.

According to the AP news wire, more than 1 billion gallons of contaminated water -- enough to fill 1,500 Olympic-sized swimming pools -- is trapped in a tunnel in the mountains above the historic town of Leadville and threatening to blow

Lake County Commissioners have declared a local state of emergency for fear that this winter's above-average snowpack will melt and cause a catastrophic tidal wave.

The water is backed up in abandoned mine shafts and a 2.1-mile drainage tunnel that is partially collapsed, creating the pooling of water contaminated with heavy metals.

"We have an amazing collection of health and science pictures" says CMSP president Henry Schleichkorn. Having pictures of the mine effecting the area in the news is a perfect example.

Images from Science Entry Deadline Approaches

A long time friend of CMSP is Rochester Institute of Technology's School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. The Biomedical Photographic Communications chair is my old buddy Mike Peres.

Mike has organized the exhibition, IMAGES from SCIENCE, scheduled for fall of 2008. He is looking for images specifically created for the purpose of recording of scientific and engineering endeavors such as oceanography, geology, biology, engineering, medicine, physics, or other related disciplines.

To be considered for this exhibition, digital files must be submitted
for the judging process. A maximum of four images per creator may be
submitted for judging. JPEG files with a resolution of about 640 x 480
pixels, medium compression, file sizes of less than 100 kb, should be emailed as attachments to RITphoto@rit.edu by February 28, 2008. Make sure to include the word IMAGES in the subject line of the message to which the images are attached.
There is no entry fee.
