The Spine
The spinal column consists of individual bones called vertebrae, the building blocks, which provide support for the spine. These vertebrae are connected in the front of the spine by intervertebral discs. Discs are very strong tissues, which are filled with a gel. Discs help to support the spine, and also allow it to move. Many ligaments and muscles attached to the back of the spine (posterior aspect) provide power for movement.

Immune System Defect May Cause Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Researchers in Norway believe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), may be caused by a wayward immune system attacking the body.

The illness, the cause of which is uncertain and has no known cure, has attracted significant controversy.

A small study, reported in PLoS One, showed a cancer drug, which inhibited the immune system, relieved symptoms in some patients.

Oct 2011 - Chicago - When it comes to vitamins, it appears you could have too much of a good thing, say researchers who report a link between their use and higher death rates among older women.

Experts have suspected for some time that supplements may only be beneficial if a person is deficient in a nutrient.

And excess may even harm, as the recent study in Archives of Internal Medicine finds.

According to most scientists, many diseases are impossible to treat. As the researchers put it they "cannot be cured, they can only be cared for".

Stem cells are one of the great hopes of medicine because they can turn into any other type of cell - nerve, heart, bone, skin, liver etc.

ABOUT THE PHOTO: Stem cells. Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of groups of differentiated human embryonic stem cells (HESCs, pink, brown and blue) on their feeder cells (dark red). HESCs are pluripotent, they are able to differentiate into any of the 200 human cell types. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals received by the immature cells. This ability makes HESCs a potential source of cells to repair damaged tissue in diseases such as Parkinson's and insulin-dependent diabetes. HESCs could also be used to grow organs for transplant that would not be rejected.

Soil can carry harmful bacteria and, although food producers have good systems in place to clean vegetables, the risk can never be entirely eliminated.

This is a reminder that it is essential to wash all fruits and vegetables, including salad, before you eat them.

photo info: Escherichia coli bacteria contaminating leafy vegetables such as baby spinach (shown) penetrate leaf stomata, from where they are impossible to wash out. Consequently, they may cause food poisoning. Contamination may take place as early as in the fields when animals such as deer or wild pigs defecate on them .Enhanced SEM. Image width: 16 micrometers.
