Eating fried food may not be bad for the heart, as long as you use olive or sunflower oil to make it, experts say. They found no heightened risk of heart disease or premature death linked to food that had been cooked in this way.

But the investigators stress that their findings, from studying the typical Spanish diet in which these "healthy" oils are found in abundance, do not apply to lard or other cooking oils.

When food is fried it becomes more calorific because the food absorbs the fat of the oils. And experts know that eating lots of fat-laden food can raise blood pressure and cause high cholesterol, which are risk factors for heart disease.

Jan 2012: Fake malaria drugs could put millions at risk. Fake and poor quality anti-malarial drugs are threatening efforts to control the disease in Africa and could put millions of lives at risk, scientists say. Malaria is believed to kill about 800,000 people a year.

The counterfeit medicines could harm patients and promote drug resistance among malaria parasites, warns the study, funded by the Wellcome Trust. Some of the fake tablets are said to have originated in China.

The researchers examined fake and substandard anti-malarial drugs that were found on sale in 11 African countries between 2002 and 2010. They discovered that some counterfeits contained a mixture of the wrong pharmaceutical ingredients which would initially alleviate the symptoms of malaria but would not cure it.

Researchers in China who compared the brain scans of 18 teenagers diagnosed with Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) with those of 18 non-addicted teenagers found differences in white matter density in over 20 brain regions. A report on their findings was published online in the January 11, 2012 issue of PLoS ONE.

All the participants had a brain scan from which the researchers assessed the density and structure of the white matter. White matter contains fibers that carry the signals various parts of the brain use to communicate with each another.

Should You Take an ASPIRIN EVERYDAY?

Healthy people who take aspirin to prevent a heart attack or stroke could be doing more harm than good, warn researchers. An analysis of more than 100,000 patients, published in Archives of Internal Medicine, concluded the risk of internal bleeding was too high.

Experts said any decision should be made with a doctor.

It is widely believed aspirin helps people who have had a heart attack or stroke. It prevents blood clots from forming by preventing cells, known as platelets, from sticking together. By reducing the number of clots formed, the aspirin is supposed to reduce the risk of another heart attack or stroke.

Pertussis is a very contagious disease, characterized by severe coughing, caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Among vaccine-preventable diseases, pertussis is one of the most commonly occurring ones in the United States. The disease can be very serious in children less than 1 year of age where it can cause lung infections and, less often, seizures or inflammation of the brain. In rare cases, pertussis can result in death in children less than 1 year of age.

Hepatitis C Vaccine Trial Promising

An early clinical trial of a hepatitis C vaccine has shown "promising" results, according to researchers at Oxford University.

The virus can go unnoticed for years, but during this time it can cause considerable liver damage.

The World Health Organization believes as many as 170 million people may be infected with the Hep C virus. It spreads through blood-to-blood contact such as sharing needles. While infection can be controlled with antiviral drugs, researchers say a vaccine "would be a major step forward".

A surgeon advising the UK government has called for the removal of all faulty breast implants, following a health scare in France.

Tim Goodacre, a member of a panel looking at implant products made by French firm PIP, said the reported risk of rupture was "quite out of the ordinary". "Good implants put in by reputable people have an extraordinarily low failure rate, so this is sohttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifmething quite out of the ordinary."

Last week the French government recommended the precautionary removal of PIP implants from 30,000 women, with the government covering the costs.

PIP products are now banned, after it was discovered they had used non-medical-grade silicone believed to be made for mattresses, which had an increased likelihood of splitting.

With temporary ice rinks appearing in towns and cities across the US, the Society of Sports Therapists is reminding people that ice skating can be a dangerous sport. It warned of a risk of serious injury and advised people take precautions.

The Society for the Prevention of Accidents said falling over and bumping into people was part of the fun, but there were safety precautions.

Skating is a fun sport it can be very dangerous and should be treated with a large degree of respect, especially as for some, it is something that is done only once or twice a year. By contrast regular skaters learn "how to fall properly".

If you fall, tuck your arms in and roll - rather than putting you hand out to stop the fall, which could damage your hand or wrist or be hit by another skater's blades. It is noted the hazards were greater for older people. So warm up properly by jogging in place and some light stretched then have fun.

Thinner Brains May Be More Susceptible to Alzheimer's Disease

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, and as far as treatment goes, the best doctors can do (for now) is try to slow its progression. Identifying people in the earliest stages of the disease – even before any symptoms appear – could be useful.

Using MRI scans to measure the thickness of specific parts of the brain, is how researchers think they can spot Alzheimer's in patients. A new study from the journal Neurology reports that an “AD signature” can predict which people with normal brain function are most likely to suffer cognitive decline in the relatively near future.

Teenagers buy fewer sugary drinks with posted calorie count

Signs that bring attention to the number of calories in sugary beverages have the power to dissuade teens from buying them, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health.

Previous research has shown that the average American teenager drinks approximately 300 calories a day in sugar-sweetened beverages including soda, which can lead to obesity and other related health problems.

"Most consumers underestimate the number of calories in a can of soda, and they often do not realize that such calories can add up quickly," lead researcher Sara Bleich said about the study.

There is a Drug Shortage, study finds. Drug shortages hit an all-time high.

Between 2006 and 2010, drug shortages increased by more than 200%, according to a Government Accountability Office report released Thursday. There were a record 196 shortages last year, and even more are expected in 2012.

“These shortages often force Americans to go without treatment,” Senator Tom Harkin said.

A result of the drug shortage has been price gouging and the creation of a “grey market” for hard-to-find drugs. “Aggressive measures are necessary to crack down on anti-consumer practices promoted by so-called 'gray markets' that inflate prices, creating a public health menace," Senator Richard Blumenthal said. "There should be zero tolerance for profiteering or price gouging in these essential drug markets.”

President Obama signed an executive order this past October requiring the FDA to expedite regulatory reviews of drug manufacturers and investigate price gouging.

Breast Cancer Patients Stop Drugs Due to Side-Effects

About a third of breast cancer patients stop taking medication because side-effects are more severe than they expect, US researchers suggest.

The Northwestern University team questioned 686 women who were taking aromatase inhibitors as treatment for estrogen-sensitive breast cancer.

It found 36% stopped their medication because of symptoms such as joint pain, hot flushes, weight gain and nausea. Aromatase inhibitors are given to postmenopausal breast cancer patients to reduce the level of estrogen in those whose tumors were fueled by the hormone.

Marathon Training May Pose Heart Risk

Doing extreme endurance exercise, like training for a marathon, can damage the heart, research reveals. MRI scans on 40 athletes training for challenging sporting events like triathlons or alpine cycle races showed most had stretched heart muscles.

Although many went on to make a complete recovery after a week, five showed more permanent injuries. The researchers told the European Heart Journal how these changes might cause heart problems like arrhythmia. They stress that their findings should not be taken to mean that endurance exercise is unhealthy.

They also say in most athletes, a combination of sensible training and adequate recovery should cause an improvement in heart muscle function.

Nearly half of cancers diagnosed in England each year - over 130,000 in total - are caused by avoidable life choices including smoking, drinking and eating the wrong things, a review reveals.

Tobacco is the biggest culprit, causing 23% of cases in men and 15.6% in women, says the Cancer Research UK report.

Next comes a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables in men's diets, while for women it is being overweight.

The report is published in the British Journal of Cancer.

Scientists have developed a vaccine that protects mice against a deadly form of the Ebola virus.

First identified in 1976, Ebola fever kills more than 90% of the people it infects.

The researchers say that this is the first Ebola vaccine to remain viable long-term and can therefore be successfully stockpiled.

The results are reported in the journal Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences.

Ebola is transmitted via bodily fluids, and can become airborne. Sufferers experience nausea, vomiting, internal bleeding and organ failure before they die.

Although few people contract Ebola each year, its effects are so swift and devastating that it is often feared that it could be used against humans in an act of terrorism.

Scientists question if Wi-Fi Laptops Can Damage Sperm

Scientists are questioning if using wi-fi on a laptop to roam the internet could harm a man's fertility, after lab work suggested ejaculated sperm were significantly damaged after only four hours of exposure.

The tests showed sperm were less able to swim and had changes in the genetic code that they carry.

Experts stress this does not mean the same would occur in a real-life setting and say men should not worry too much, but more studies are recommended.

Doctors say they have found a medical test that can diagnose the most common curable cause of high blood pressure. Conn's syndrome - a disease of the adrenal glands that sit above the kidneys - is thought to be the cause behind one in 20 cases of hypertension.

But until now it has been difficult to detect, requiring a complex series of tests on blood taken from a vein supplying the adrenal gland. Experts at the University of Cambridge say a simple scan can spot the problem.

The hi-tech PET-CT scan looks for small growths in the adrenal glands that are about the size of a penny, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reports.

These benign growths or tumors - called adenomas - pump out too much of a hormone called aldosterone, which in turn raises blood pressure.

There are drugs that can control the high blood pressure caused by Conn's syndrome, but the only cure is surgery, so making the diagnosis is very important”

The researchers developed a special radioactive tracer called 11C-metomidate, which lights up culprit adenomas in the scan. Once the problem is identified the condition can be treated either by surgically removing the affected gland or by using a drug to block the effects of aldosterone.

The HPA poll of 1,800 people in England also found one in 10 people keep leftover antibiotics - and many would self-medicate next time they got ill.

Cholera is an infection of the small intestine that causes a large amount of watery diarrhea. Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. The bacteria releases a toxin that causes increased release of water in the intestines, which produces severe diarrhea.

An international study has linked an industrial solvent to Parkinson's disease.

Researchers found a six-fold increase in the risk of developing Parkinson's in individuals exposed in the workplace to trichloroethylene (TCE).

Although many uses for TCE have been banned around the world, the chemical is still used as a degreasing agent.

The research was based on analysis of 99 pairs of twins selected from US data records.

Parkinson's can result in limb tremors, slowed movement and speech impairment, but the exact cause of the disease is still unknown, and there is no cure.
TCE has been used in paints, glue, carpet cleaners, dry-cleaning solutions and as a degreaser. It has been banned in the food and pharmaceutical industries in most regions of the world since the 1970s, due to concerns over its toxicity.

In 1997, the US authorities banned its use as an anaesthetic, skin disinfectant, grain fumigant and coffee decaffeinating agent, but it is still used as a degreasing agent for metal parts.

Fiber and Whole Grains Reduce Bowel Cancer Risk

Eating more cereals and whole grains could reduce the risk of developing colon-rectal cancer, a study says.

Researchers from Imperial College London found that for every 10 grams a day increase in fiber intake, there was a 10% drop in the risk of bowel cancer.

But their analysis of 25 previous studies found that fruit and vegetable fiber did not reduce risk. A cancer charity called for more detailed research on the quantity and type of fiber to eat.

Eating fiber and whole grains is known to help protect against cardiovascular disease, but experts say that any link with colon rectal cancer is less clear because studies have not had consistent results.

Just eat more fiber when you can.

Symptoms of shingles

The first sign of shingles is usually excessively sensitive, tingling or burning skin where the shingles rash subsequently appears. The area is often painful. At the same time, you may experience fever, headache and enlarged lymph nodes.

After a few days, the characteristic shingles rash appears as a band or patch of red spots on the side of the trunk or face. It usually appears on one side only. The rash develops into fluid-filled blisters that then collapse, forming small ulcers. These dry out and form crusts.

A common complication of shingles is pain in the area of the rash that persists after it has disappeared, called post-herpetic neuralgia which is more likely to occur the older you are.

The Spine
The spinal column consists of individual bones called vertebrae, the building blocks, which provide support for the spine. These vertebrae are connected in the front of the spine by intervertebral discs. Discs are very strong tissues, which are filled with a gel. Discs help to support the spine, and also allow it to move. Many ligaments and muscles attached to the back of the spine (posterior aspect) provide power for movement.

Immune System Defect May Cause Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Researchers in Norway believe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), may be caused by a wayward immune system attacking the body.

The illness, the cause of which is uncertain and has no known cure, has attracted significant controversy.

A small study, reported in PLoS One, showed a cancer drug, which inhibited the immune system, relieved symptoms in some patients.

The vaccine, known as RTS,S, is one of two experimental malaria vaccines being tested around the world.

Stem cells are one of the great hopes of medicine because they can turn into any other type of cell - nerve, heart, bone, skin, liver etc.

Listeria is a hardy bacteria found in soil and water that can be carried by animals. It is often found in processed meats because it can contaminate a processing facility and stay there for a long period of time. It is also common in unpasteurized cheeses and unpasteurized milk. It is less common in produce like cantaloupe, but there have been a couple of other listeria outbreaks in fruits and vegetables in recent years. When a person contracts the disease, it can cause fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms and even death. One in five people who have listeria can die.

The thyroid gland controls metabolism through the production of thyroid hormone. It may become overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism).

If you're producing too much hormone, and the gland is overactive, you're said to be hyperthyroid, which affects 2 per cent of women and 0.2 per cent of men.

Europe's First Embryonic Stem Cell Surgery

Doctors at Moorfields Eye hospital in London have been given the go-ahead to carry out Europe's first clinical trial using human embryonic stem cells.

They will inject retinal cells into the eyes of 12 patients with an incurable disease, Stargardt's macular dystrophy, which causes progressive sight loss.

The disease develops in childhood and affects around one in 10,000 people.

It causes the gradual loss of central vision leaving only peripheral sight.

The trial will test the safety of using replacement retinal cells known as retinal pigment epithelial cells, derived from human embryonic stem cells.

Sept 2011 - Polio has been found in China for the first time since 1999 after spreading from Pakistan, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed.

It said a strain of polio (WPV1) found in China was genetically linked with the type now circulating in Pakistan.

At least seven cases have now been confirmed in China's western Xinjiang province, which borders Pakistan.

August 2011 - A strain of Salmonella resistant to the most powerful antibiotics has been found in the UK, France and Denmark.

The outbreak emerged in Africa then spread to Europe, picking up antibiotic resistance along the way, says a team of international researchers. They are calling on health officials to step up monitoring to stop the "superbug" spreading globally.

Cases have grown from a handful in 2002 to 500 worldwide in 2008, they report in The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus, was identified in 1983 as the etiologic agent for the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is characterized by changes in the population of T-cell lymphocytes that play a key role in the immune defense system. In the infected individual, the virus causes a depletion of subpopulation of T-cells, called T-helper cells, which leaves these patients susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain malignancies.

Two studies in Africa add weight to previous data showing drugs used to treat HIV can reduce infection risk when taken daily.

The World Health Organization said the studies could have "enormous impact" in preventing HIV transmission.

The findings were revealed in the run-up to an AIDS conference in Rome.

"This is a major scientific breakthrough which re-confirms the essential role that antiretroviral medicine has to play in the AIDS response," said Michel Sidibé, executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

Women who want the best chance of having a baby should make sure they floss their teeth regularly, say doctors. Poor oral health is as bad for fertility as obesity - delaying conception by about two months.

Experts at a fertility meeting in Sweden heard how women with gum disease took over seven months to conceive, compared to the usual five months. They believe the underlying cause is inflammation. Unchecked, this can set off a chain of reactions capable of damaging the body's normal workings.

Peridontal disease has already been linked with heart disease, type 2 diabetes and miscarriage, plus poor sperm quality in men.

A new approach to developing cancer vaccines has been used to treat prostate tumours, an international team of scientists has said.

DNA from healthy cells was used to create a vaccine which cured 80% of mice, Nature Medicine reports. The researchers believe the principle could be applied to other cancers and have begun studies on melanoma.

Cancer Research UK said it was a significant development, but human trials would be needed. Cancer vaccines are not new. Unlike traditional vaccines which protect against infection, these work by making the immune system attack tumors already in the body.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

March 2011; The cholera epidemic affecting Haiti looks to be far worse than officials had thought, experts fear. Rather than affecting a predicted 400,000 people, the diarrhoeal disease could strike nearly twice as many as this, latest estimates suggest.

The World Health Organization says everything possible is being done to contain the disease. Before last year's devastating earthquake in the Caribbean nation, no cases of cholera had been seen on Haiti for more than a century.

The bacterial disease is spread from person-to-person through contaminated food and water.

These gram-negative bacteria each have a single polar strand or flagellum (purple), which they use to move. They are water-borne pathogens that are transmitted to humans in contaminated water and food. The bacteria produce a toxin that causes diarrhea and extreme dehydration, which may be fatal if untreated. Outbreaks are associated with poor sanitary conditions and are often epidemic.

Experts believe they can develop a genetic screening test that can tell doctors which men with prostate cancer need aggressive treatment.

Early trial results for Cancer Research UK suggest men with high levels of cell cycle progression (CCP) genes have the most deadly tumors.

The CCP test could potentially save men with milder forms of the disease from unnecessary treatment.

Large-scale studies are now needed, the Lancet Oncology journal reports.

Mucilage has a unique purpose in some carnivorous plants. The plant genera Drosera (Sundews), Pinguicula, and others have leaves studded with mucilage-secreting glands, and use a "flypaper trap" to capture insects.

Carnivorous plants are plants that derive some or most of their nutrients (but not energy) from trapping and consuming animals or protozoans, typically insects and other arthropods.

Carnivorous plants appear adapted to grow in places where the soil is thin or poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen, such as acidic bogs and rock outcroppings. Charles Darwin wrote Insectivorous Plants, the first well-known treatise on carnivorous plants, in 1875.

This is a very cool image showing synapses. Synapses, the junctions between the ends (green, swollen) of two nerve cells (neurons). Signals are passed along nerve cells in the form of an electrical impulse (flashes of light).

Synapses are responsible for the transmission of this electrical impulse from one nerve cell to the next, using chemical transmitters to cross the synaptic gap. The fibers of the nerve cells (the dendrites and axons) are surrounded by a myelin sheath (light green). This insulates them and allows signals to be transmitted along the fibers more quickly.

Taking a small dose of aspirin every day has been linked to a reduced risk of cancer. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a drug that has been used for many years as a painkiller. It has an anti-inflammatory action, and is used to relieve various pain and it costs 1 penny per tablet.

It works by helping to prevent blood clots forming in the blood vessels, by stopping cells in the blood known as platelets from sticking together and clogging an artery.

There is considerable evidence suggesting aspirin can reduce the risk of getting or dying from many different types of cancer. Early studies suggested the benefits come from taking high doses of aspirin. But, the latest research suggests even small doses - 75mg - can reduce the risk of cancer when taken for at least five years.

Supposedly aspirin can affect your health in other ways, such as increasing the chances of bleeding from the gut. So they advise you speak with your doctor.

Gene Therapy Could Help Memory

A gene therapy technique which aims to ease memory problems linked to Alzheimer's Disease has been successfully tested in mice. US scientists used it to increase levels of a chemical which helps brain cells signal to each other.

This signaling is hindered in Alzheimer's Disease, the journal Nature reported.

Aging populations in many countries around the world mean that Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia are set to increase.

Researchers at the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease in San Francisco believe that boosting the brain chemical, a neurotransmitter called EphB2, could help reduce or even prevent some of the worst effects of the condition.

Their research suggests that the chemical plays an important role in memory, and is depleted in Alzheimer's patients.

Eczema from ileostomy. Skin rash in eczema, caused by intestinal leakage from an ileostomy bag for an elderly patient. The ileostomy bag (white) has been implanted in a surgical operation that passes the ileum (the last part of the small intestine) through the abdominal wall and attaches it to the bag. This is done in cases of severe disorders of the colon (large intestine). The ileostomy may be temporary or permanent (if the colon was removed). Digested intestinal contents (feces) drain into the bag, which is periodically emptied. Leakage of the feces is a possible complication. A new bag may need to be fitted to prevent leakage. The skin rash can be treated with steroid creams.

Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Seeds from related plants have been found in Mexico dating back to 7000 to 5500 B.C. References to pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." "Pepon" was changed by the French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion."

Native American Indians used pumpkin as a staple in their diets centuries before the pilgrims landed. They also dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. Indians would also roast long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and eat them. When white settlers arrived, they saw the pumpkins grown by the Indians and pumpkin soon became a staple in their diets.
